BELPRE–Post play may be a dying art in today’s basketball, but the showdown between Belpre’s Kyna Waderker and Trimble’s Jayne Six was one to behold as Trimble pulled out a 63-52 win over Belpre. While both operate in the post, Waderker offers more of a finesse game and Six is more of a old school post player taking advanage of her strengh.

The two met at halfcourt for the tip-off and Waderker got the best of Six winning the tip. She then put the first points on the board with a layup 28 seconds later. Six responded with a quick basket at the other end.

Belpre’s Curstin Giffin gave the Golden Eagles the lead at the end of one with a 3-ball with 3:12 left in the first quarter. Those were the final points scored in the opening eight minutes.

Trimble attempted to hold for a last-second shot by ticking away the last 30 seconds of the quarter, but the Belpre defense played well, forcing a heavily contested shot.

Belpre quickly extended their lead with a jumper from Ray and a Waderker steal and lay-in for an 18-12 lead early in the second. Six hit a quick bucket for the visitors during the 5-2 spurt.

Six pulled up at the rim giving THS a 21-20 lead, but Spencer and Ray answered with a 3s of their own. In the final seconds, Sophia Ives was bringing up the ball, but Ray picked her pocket and threw it half-court for a last-second lay-in by Waderker making the score 28-21 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 7-4 scoring run, with Waderker scoring all seven. With two minutes left in the third, a 12-3 scoring run put the game in favor of Trimble.

Skyla Moore and Brianna Osborne connecting on the visitors first 3s of the game finally gave Trimble its first lead in the game with :45 seconds left. Giffin tried to lay-in from a rebound before kicking it out to Kaitlin Richards, whose last-second 3 missed.

Coach Murray blamed himself for allowing the momentum shift. “I did a poor job adjusting in the second half,” Murray said, “Instead of calling a timeout and controlling the momentum, they played very well in the second half and they deserved it.”

It was a sloppy start in the fourth with both teams turning the ball over before Trimble head coach Joe Richards called a timeout to get his team under control.

The time-out paid off for Richards. Trimble went on a 7-2 run with a 3 from Imler and two baskets from Six. Ray’s 3 made it 50-47 with 4:13 left to go, but that was the closest the Golden Eagles would get.

Osborne made another 3 giving, tying her with Moore with a team-high two 3’s and Six scoring four points in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach.

Abbey LaFatch went to the hole for an and-1 cutting the lead into single figures, before Imler picked off Waderker for a last-second layup.

Belpre (11-5) hosts Federal Hocking Saturday.
