BELPRE — Marietta took the honors of first place at the Wood County Middle School golf championship Wednesday at Oxbow Golf and Country Club with a combined team effort of 388.

Parkersburg Catholic finished the course as the runners-up in the championship and also ended the 2018 golf season as the middle school regular season champions by scoring a combined 423.

Marietta’s AJ Grahm and Grayson Herb were two big factors which helped push their team to the top of the podium. Both Tigers tallied an 87 by the end of the 18 holes and shared the second place position, finishing their run at the championship as two of the top three performers of the tournament. The only individual scoring lower than the duo was Catholic’s Blake Lewis, who golfed with consistency through the 18 holes by completing the course with a low score of 83.

“It feels pretty good,” said medalist Blake Lewis. “I’m really proud of my team. We came out here and fell a little short but we did good.”

The eighth-grade Crusader has now experienced middle school success as an individual golfer and as a teammate. Lewis has every intention of playing the sport in high school with many of the other golfers from the schools who were at the championship Wednesday.

“I’m looking forward to playing with the kids I know this year and I’m looking forward to playing with them next year,” said Blake Lewis.

The tournament champions, Marietta, were the only team with more than one top 10 finisher. The competition for an individual top ten spot in the championship proved to be a close one for the young golfers on the links.

Taking the individual fourth place spot was Austin Reeves from Blennerhassett, who scored a 91. Fifth place was Jacob Ferrier who scored a 92. Taking sixth was William Barniak from Willliamstown, with a 94. Seventh place and eight place was tied at a 97. The two spots in the top 10 went to Emerson Simons from Spencer and Hayden Leavitt from Van Devender, respectivley. Anna Earl from Jackson scored a 101 on the course to take the ninth individual spot at the tournament and closing out the list for the the top 10 scorers of the tournament was Ritchie County’s Andrew Freeland who scored a 102.

The team competition was also a close battle for the golfers. Third place went to Jackson with their five golfers putting together a combined 426. Fourth place went to Edison, scoring a 435. Fifth place went to VanDevender with 438. Sixth was Ritchie County scoring a 443. Warren took seventh with a 444 followed by Blennerhassett whose team took eight place with a 451. Ninth place went to Williamstown who scored a combined 453. Tenth place was filled by Pleasants County with a 460. The 11th spot was shared by Belpre and Spencer, whose teams both tallied their scores to 466. Hamilton followed in 13th with 504, and 14th went Marietta St. Mary, whose four golfers scored a 505.

“We came in here undefeated hoping to take it all the way and win the county tournament,” said Catholic head coach Ryan Lewis. “I’m proud of these Parkersburg Catholic kids. They had a terrific season finishing up at 25-1. So I am very pleased with these kids.”
