Gilmer 20, Wirt 14

GLENVILLE — Gilmer County gave head coach Thomas Cogar his first victory here Friday night as the Titans nipped visiting Wirt County, 20-14, inside Morris Stadium.

Despite a Trent Richards touchdown run and an early 8-0 lead for the Tigers, now 1-2 with a home game next Friday versus Parkersburg Catholic, the Titans answered right back with an Elijah Facemire 81-yard kickoff return. Joey Frame, who had 62 yards rushing on 15 attempts, booted the extra point to make it 8-7.

Gilmer County, which is off next week and returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 when the Crusaders come to town, took the lead for good on Michael Roy’s 80-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The first quarter score of 13-8 stood until Ean Hamric had a 95-yard Pick-6 in the third quarter as Frame booted another PAT.

The Tigers, who limited the Titans to just 73 total yards, had a punt return for a touchdown by Nathan Murray, but it wasn’t enough.

Max Hulse also recorded two interceptions and had 12 total tackles for the victors. Frame made 11 stops while Titan teammates Jared Frederick and Isaac Poole made 10 tackles apiece.

Doddridge 48, Calhoun 0

MT. ZION — In a game which lasted just a half here Friday night due to weather issues, visiting Doddridge County jumped out to a 35-0 lead after a quarter of play and improved to 3-0 as the Bulldogs blanked Calhoun County, 48-0.

Tanner Lett’s 59-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Devericks on the first play from scrimmage followed by D.J. Devinney’s PAT were all the points DCHS needed.

Hunter America, who had eight totes for 144 stripes, then scored on back-to-back runs from 36 yards out. Devericks then hauled in a 56-yard TD reception from Lett, who later added a 20-yard scoring jaunt. The final six-pointer for the Bulldogs came on Dylan Knight’s 10-yard burst.

Doddridge County, which saw Lett hit 5 of 7 attempts for 145 yards with three of those covering 122 yards going to Devericks, returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 at Ritchie County.

Calhoun County, which had 24 total yards in the half, will carry a 1-2 mark when Tyler Consolidated comes to town next Friday. Red Devil Travis Richards hauled in two passes for 25 yards from signal-caller Adam Parsons.

Ritchie 28, Frontier 13

ELLENBORO — Zach Cline and Garrett Owens were too much for visiting Frontier to handle here Friday night at Chuck Schofield Memorial Stadium as Ritchie County improved to 2-1 following a 28-13 victory versus the Cougars.

Eli Fickiesen’s 5-yard TD run and Briar West’s PAT gave the 1-2 Cougars, who play host at 7 p.m. next Friday to Cameron, a 7-0 lead after a quarter.

However, the Rebels got a 7-yard TD run by Cline and then an Owens two-point conversion run to go ahead 8-7. It was 14-6 at the break when Dakota Wayne hit Tatem McCloy for a 7-yard touchdown strike.

Owens, who finished with 17 carries and 93 stripes, found paydirt in the third quarter from 30 yards out to push the Rebels’ advantage to 20-7.

Fickiesen, though, scored from the 8 to close the deficit to 20-13 entering the fourth.

The only six-pointer in the final stanza was a 49-yard jaunt by Cline, who finished with 14 totes and a game-high 136 yards rushing. Owens added the conversion run.

Wayne hit on 2 of 4 passes for 45 yards with Blaine Bowie hauling in the other reception which covered 37 yards. Fickiesen rushed 15 times for 87 yards.

The Rebels return to action with a 7:30 p.m. Thursday kickoff in St. Marys.
