GSC defeats UVA-Wise in opener

Glenville State 17, UVa-Wise 7

WISE, VIRGINIA — Despite a near 90 minute lighting delay prior to halftime, Glenville State College got its Mountain East Conference campaign started on the right foot here Thursday night as the Pioneers topped host Virginia-Wise, 17-7, at Carl Smith Stadium in the season opener for both programs.

The Pioneers, who were plus-three in turnover margin and also won the penalty battle, led 14-0 at intermission.

Head coach Eric Smith’s squad received game-highs of 25 rushes and 124 yards from Mario Pender, but it was Tre Crutcher’s 27-yard TD reception from Jaylen McNair which got the G-men on the board first with 3:12 left before intermission.

On the Cavaliers’ ensuing play, a lateral was scooped up by GSC’s D’Andrew Brown, which he returned 14 yards for paydirt and a 14-0 lead after Justin Watts booted his second extra point.

Wise finally scored early in the fourth when Brycen Lee hit Kaian Duverger with a 55-yard TD toss. However, with 3:58 to play, Watts drilled a 48-yard field goal for the final margin of victory.

Thomas Boles rushed 19 times for 65 yards while McNair hit on 8 of 20 attempts for 61 yards.

Dominic Cizauskas had 10 solo tackles in the victory and finished with 19 total stop and one forced fumble. Quintavius Twine also forced a fumble for the G-men, who also received eight total stops from JQ Haislip-Hightower.

GSC will try for a 2-0 start at noon next Saturday when Notre Dame invades Morris Stadium.
