PARKERSBURG - The Humane Society of Parkersburg will hold its annual Walk Your Paws fundraiser June 7 at shelters 1A and 1B at City Park.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m.
This year's theme is "Disco Dogs" and participants will be encouraged to dress their dog like they're going to a disco dance, according to Michelle Earl, executive director of the Humane Society.
Cops and Slobbers was the theme last year at the 20th Walk Your Paws fundraiser for the Parkersburg Humane Society. Dianne Modesitt, an employee of the society, brought her three dogs to the 2013 event and dressed them to the theme.
"I'm hoping to see some 'fros' on some dogs," she said.
Prizes will be awarded for top fundraising and best-themed-dressed dogs and walkers. Participants who bring a bag of Purina dog, puppy, kitten or cat food will be entered into drawings for door prizes.
Other activities include a photo booth, a disc jockey playing music, pet tricks and Puppy Picasso paw prints on paper, she said. The Humane Society added an affordable vaccine clinic for dogs at the event this year, Earl said.
The goal for the fundraiser is $32,000, Earl said.
"It's our biggest fundraiser for the shelter," Earl said.
The fundraiser provides funding for programs at the shelter, including medical care for emergency treatment and routine vaccinations and worming, she said. Cats and dogs entering the shelter are vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms, Earl said.
"Prevention of illness is the key to a healthy shelter environment and this is why we ensure our animals receive the healthiest start we can give them," Earl said. "In addition, all of our shelter animals are spayed and neutered prior to leaving for their adoptive homes to ensure to combat the overpopulation in our area."
The society operates a public spay and neuter clinic offering discounted procedures regardless of residency and without income guidelines.
