Denzil Paul Barton, 78, of Mineral Wells, W.Va., passed away on April 17, 2014, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
He was born Feb. 12, 1936, in Wirt County, W.Va., a son of the late Jesse and Girtha Cline Barton.
Denzil was a 1955 graduate of Wirt County High School where he was an outstanding football player. He was U.S. Army veteran and retired from DuPont Washington Works with 37 years of service. He was a supporter of Parkersburg South Sports and Erickson Stadium. He coached youth basketball and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he was a deacon and had served in many other areas and committees of the church and a member of the DuPont Retirees Club.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn J. Johnson Barton; three daughters, Peggy Robertson of Smyrna, Tenn., Jackie Boston (Rusty) of Charleston, S.C., and Jessica Ward of Mineral Wells; one son, David Barton (Charlene) of Parkersburg; two sisters, Beatrice Oliver (Gene) of Parkersburg and Rosie Hardbarger (Terry) of Wirt County, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and his fur baby, Sophie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Lott; three brothers, Robert, Pearl and Leon Barton; six sisters, Geneva Barton, Marjorie Ecker, Marie Hardbarger, Gladys Hayes, Dora Cowan and Opal Hardbarger.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, April 21, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg, with Pastor Michael Lamb officiating, flag presentation by the American Legion Post #15, Parkersburg. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
