On behalf of the Healthy Community Coalition of Wood County, I would like to thank the Parkersburg City Council for passing the resolution to prohibit the use of all tobacco products within 15 feet of any playground governed by the city of Parkersburg. According to the U.S. Surgeon General's report, any amount of exposure to secondhand smoke is unacceptable. In addition to secondhand smoke exposure, children will be protected from tobacco litter, including burning cigarettes and tobacco spit which can accumulate in the play area.
Thanks to Mayor Bob Newell and other city employees for supporting this project and to the city council members for recognizing the importance of clean outdoor air. Parkersburg's playgrounds will now be safe places for our children to play!
