Every day we read about unemployment, cost of living, economic issues, failing education systems and crime. In comparison to these issues litter seems like a minor problem.
In my opinion litter plays a part in all of these issues. Littering is an act of irresponsibility, disregard for the law, and laziness. I believe that crime rate is lower in areas that are clean and attractive, and that property values are higher where the residents have ownership pride.
Our small town has numerous problems that are beyond our control, we also have assets to offer investors. Interstate, good schools, a wonderful library, historical homes and beautiful churches.
We have friendly people. If you were looking to relocate a business our city officials would wine and dine you with the utmost hospitality. If you were just looking for a home one of the many real estate agents would be your personal guide.
For a moment be the eyes of a person visiting our town. You would see a small town that unfortunately has a downtown with many vacant buildings, And last but not least litter.
You would be appalled to see the amount of litter on the streets and in our parks. I dare say this would certainly impact the decision of anyone. Their conclusion might be that the people are lawless, irresponsible and lazy. Would you want to make a move here?
I am sure it is difficult to catch the people who are trashing our city, however it is not impossible. I think it would be interesting to know how many tickets were written in the last year for littering and what fines resulted.
Litterers can afford to pay fines, after all they can afford to buy fast food, alcohol, cigarettes, disposable diapers, expensive energy drinks, etc. But fines are not enough. Litterers should have to do community service by picking up litter or going to jail.
With disgust I pick up litter almost everyday and on the days I don't pick it up I need to. You cannot imagine some of the filthy things people throw out on the side of the road.
I am challenging our law enforcement, city officials, business leaders, teachers, parents, homeowners and residents in general to get on board and let's clean up our town. We will all benefit from the effort and maybe we will all have more pride. We have a lot going for us we just need to capitalize on it.
