WELLSBURG -Parkersburg South, attempting to win two games in a row for the first time this season, couldn't accomplish that mission here Friday night as Brooke rolled to a 41-28 win over the Patriots in a Two Rivers Athletic Conference contest that saw Cody Smith score all four touchdowns for the Patriots.
In a game that started 30 minutes late, Brooke (2-5) jumped on top on its first possession, capping a 60-yard drive with a 38-yard TD pass from Aaron Walker to Thomas Cole midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 Bruins lead.
South (2-5) used a 74-yard run by Brendan Schwendeman on the final play of the first quarter to set up its first score, a 4-yard TD run by Smith to open the second quarter and tie the game at 7 with 11:54 left in the first half.
Brooke immediately responded with a 58-yard TD march capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Nicholas Ossman with 8:26 to play before intermission. The Bruins missed the extra point, but still led, 13-7.
South, trying to take the lead before halftime, threw a late interception in its own territory, leading to a Brooke 40-yard touchdown on a halfback pass from Ossman to Cole with just 14 ticks on the clock. It was 20-7 Bruins at halftime and Brooke also had the momentum.
But South didn't fold. The Patriots used a 52-yard Schwendeman run to set up a 6-yard TD run by Smith with 8:05 left in the third quarter that cut the deficit to 20-14.
That, however, was as close as South would get as Brooke quickly reeled off three touchdowns to seal its second victory. First came a 2-yard TD run by Nigel Bowland, followed by a successful 2-point conversion pass with 3:53 left in the third quarter. Then, on the first play of the fourth quarter, Walker hit Heath Hildreth for a 61-yard score and a 34-14 lead. On Brooke's next possession, Ossman scored from 18 yards out with 4:58 to go and it was 42-14 Bruins.
South managed a pair of late TDs as Gilkeson hit Smith with TD passes of 1 and 28 yards.
The Patriots got a 156-yard rushing performance from Schwendeman, despite getting the ball to him just eight times. Gilkeson carried 10 times for 71 yards and completed 9 of 13 passes for 52 yards.
South returns home next Friday night when Greenbrier East visits the Erickson All-Sports Facility.
