Mary Lou Garrett, 90, of Cox's Mill Community, W.Va., departed this life 1:05 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at her residence following a brief illness.
Born March 1, 1923 in Upshur County, W.Va., daughter of the late Asa V. and Reta Pearl Douglas Cooper.
Mary Lou was a devoted school teacher of 27 years but had to take early retirement because of vision problems. She was a graduate of Tanner High School and Glenville State College and spent most of her teaching career in Ritchie County including three one room schools. Mary Lou loved her grandchildren, her cats, listening to the birds and butterflies. She also was a member of the Troy Baptist Church.
On Oct. 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Nelson Edward Garrett, who preceded her in death on March 23, 2013. Surviving are two daughters, Susan Messenger and husband John of Glenville, W.Va. and Nancy L. Harold and husband William of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Angie Volk and husband Frank of Cross Lanes, W.Va., Greg Messenger and wife Chris of Cross Lanes, W.Va., and Amber Wright and husband Eric of Chestertown, Md.; and five great-grandchildren, Garrett and Lauren Volk, Tiarra Thornton and Emma and Andrew Wright; and one brother, Roy Cooper and wife Linda of Parkersburg, W.Va. Mary Lou is also survived by several nieces, nephews and her beloved caretaker, Annette Ledbetter. Along with her husband and parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by one brother and sister-in-law, John Paul Cooper and wife Sheila.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, W.Va., 26351 at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, with Rev. Gene Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Weston Masonic Cemetery, Weston. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
