PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg High tallied a pair of goals each half here Saturday night at the Erickson All-Sports Facility and senior Evan Rhodes produced a hat trick as the Big Red boys posted a 4-1 victory against host Parkersburg South.
Despite playing without regular keeper Reid Strobl, who was out with an injury, the red and white got quality work from goalie Nathan Holland and improved to 2-0-2 on the campaign with a home match coming up Tuesday versus Hurricane.
Head coach Don Fosselman's club never looked back after Rhodes scored his first goal in the 21st minute. Rhodes happened to be in the middle of the pitch all alone when a ball bounced his way. He saw the opportunity and blistered a lined shot into the back of the net from 30-plus yards out.

Parkersburg senior Evan Rhodes tallied a hat trick Saturday night at the Erickson All-Sports Facility to help lead the Big Reds to a 4-1 victory against Parkersburg South.
Just three seconds into the 37th minute, Tyler Bro sent a nice through pass toward the goal. Rhodes tracked it down, did a fancy dribble from one foot to the other and then beat PSHS (1-2) keeper Adam Colteryahn for a 2-0 Big Red cushion.
A mere three minutes into the second half Rhodes struck again to tally his hat trick. Tommy Logston sent a cross toward the box, but it was too far ahead of Rhodes. However, the ball went in and out of the grasp of Colteryahn and once he lost control of it Rhodes was there for an easy goal. Rhodes nearly had a fourth goal two minutes after that, but he took a pass from Tyler Miller and booted it just wide of the post.
Parkersburg South, which travels Tuesday to face Wheeling Park, had several solid scoring chances in the first half, but couldn't convert. Also, PHS had some near misses in the first 40 minutes and that included a header from Bro following a Rhodes throw-in that clanked off the top of the crossbar.

After the Big Reds had taken a 2-0 advantage, it appeared the Patriots of head man Ed Ayers had cut the deficit in half. However, Wyatt Parsons' goal from what would've been a Peter Puschautz assist was waived off for offsides.
PHS went ahead 4-0 in the 58th minute when Logston tracked down a long through from Matt Powney and scored. Powney nearly had another assist about five minutes later when he crossed the ball to Ian Schmidt, but the shot just went wide of the post.
Junior Vincent Scalise's goal in the 71st minute allowed the Patriots to avoid the shutout.
Parkersburg South 3, Parkersburg 3
PARKERSBURG -Talk about an evenly matched.
The girls soccer teams representing Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South met Saturday morning at the Erickson All-Sports Facility and not only did the match end in a 3-3 tie but each team also took nine shots and each goal made six saves.
The first half ended in -what else? - a 1-1 tie as the visiting Big Reds drew first blood when Lauren Taylor set up Rylee Boggess just 15 minutes into the contest.
It didn't take the Patriots long to tie the match as just one minute later, Cassie Whitlatch scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-1.
Just four minutes after halftime, Taylor put the Big Reds back on top, taking a pass from Taylor Hunkele for a 2-1 PHS lead. But once again the Patriots responded as Alli Jones scoring on a penalty kick in the 19th minute to knot the game at 2 apiece.
Two minutes later, South was awarded another penalty kick and this time it was Emily Brezler who scored for the Patriots, who took their first lead of the day at 3-2.
That lead lasted seven minutes as Parkersburg's Hailey Hill scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-all and that is how the match ended.
Goalkeepers Taylor Beckley of PHS and Alexis Skinner of South each turned away six scoring opportunities and each team had three corner kicks.
The result left both teams undefeated as PHS is 2-0-2 and South is 3-0-1.
The only thing that didn't end in a tie was the junior varsity contest, which South won 1-0 on an unassisted goal in the first half by Taylor Braun.
The Patriots will host Morgantown Monday, with the varsity match at 5:30, followed by the JVs. PHS will travel to Hurricane for a 5:30 p.m. match on Tuesday.
