PARKERSBURG - The Junior Races and Tiny Tot Trot event, which are part of the annual running of the News and Sentinel Half Marathon, are being moved again.
Now, the events which start at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18 will be held at Jackson Middle School on the track.
Late last month, the decision to leave the regular home of Parkersburg's Stadium Field was made. However, the switch to the Erickson All-Sports Facility didn't last long. That's because Parkersburg South isn't going to have its track ready to go for the races.
"There were some depressions on the track that were really bad," said PSHS head boys track coach Steve Fox. "They have to replace several sections of the track. They are going to put an all new track in, but the underlayment itself had to be prepared."
Marchell Allman, the the kids race director, had gotten the OK from Rick Leach, the Parkersburg South athletics director, to move everything to the EASF, but it just didn't work out as planned.
"The track at Erickson is not completed," Allman said. "They've been working on it. They've run behind schedule and it's not going to be ready is what we got word of and we had to find a different location. We are scrambling and we are going to have it at Jackson."
Allman said she was unaware of the fact a potential problem might arise once they decided to move things from Stadium Field to Erickson.
"Everything is still the same. It's the same time, same everything. It's just that the location is being changed again, subject to change," she quipped.
Children ages 11 and younger may participate in the youth races. The Tiny Tot Trot is held for children 5 and younger, while those 6 and older compete in the Junior Races.
Although youth race participants may register on race day, they are encouraged to register early via mail, online or at the Runners Expo on Friday before the race to ensure the correct size on their T-shirt.
