Garnett Marie Chancey Thomas, 89, of Parkersburg passed away at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus on June 19, 2013, after an extended illness.
She was born in Liverpool, W.Va., on Feb. 12, 1924 to the late William Harrison and Tennessee Davis Chancey.
She was educated in Wood County Schools and graduated from PHS with the class of 1942 and was a member of the A Cappella Choir. She graduated from Mountain State Business College and worked for the Ames Baldwin Company, Tri-State Drygoods Company and later as a deputy for the Wood County Clerk.
She married Boyd J. Thomas on June 23, 1946 and to that union were born five sons who survive her: Daniel B. (Marjorie) of Belleville, Mark E. (Charlene) of Norfolk, Va., Philip W. (Olga) of Coolville, Ohio, Jeffrey P. (Dayne) of Parkersburg and Timothy D. (Ellen) of New Concord, Ohio. Besides her sons, she is also survived by her grandchildren: Elizabeth Anne, Matthew, Amy, Andrew, Anne, Tiffany (Jarrod), Kerrie, Collin, Amanda (Anthony), Laura (Phil) and great-grandchildren: Michael Paul and Chase; a special niece, Sharlene Heinselman; loving caregiver, Linda Barnette; several beloved nieces, nephews, church friends and neighbors.
During her lifetime she was very active in the Beechwood Presbyterian Church serving at various times as: youth leader, Sunday School teacher, pianist, choir director, Deacon and later as Elder. She also served several years as organist of the Parkersburg Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mrs. Thomas was the accompanist for three different gospel quartets formed by she and her husband, Boyd. She enjoyed the violin, and took lessons during the latter part of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband Boyd J. Thomas to whom she was married to for 55 years and her four sisters: Opal Lambert, Doris Ingle, Velma Taylor and Sybil Rowan.
Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday by Pastors Rick Johnson of Beechwood Presbyterian Church and Daniel Morikone of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Friends may call at the Vaughan Funeral Home on Friday, June 21, between 2 and 4 p.m. and 6 and 8 p.m. and one hour before services on Saturday, June 22, at the Beechwood Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to either church or to the charity of one's choice. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
