PARKERSBURG - Sharon Mortensen, 59, of Vienna died of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident on West Virginia 2 near Deerwalk Highway in Wood County Monday night, officials said.
The head-on collision occurred just north of Wood County 31 on W.Va. 2 around 6 p.m., Wood County Sheriff's Office said.
Mortensen was driving southbound in a 2006 Toyota Corolla when she collided with a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker driven by Codi Norman, 25, of Mineral Wells, the sheriff's office said. Abby Little, 23, of Mineral Wells and a 3-month-old child were passengers in the Chevy Tracker.
The sheriff's office said Little sustained serious injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Charleston after being taken to Camden Clark Medical Center by ambulance. Her condition was unavailable Monday night.
Norman and the 3-month-old child were treated and released from CCMC with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
The cause of the accident, which occurred just before 6 p.m. Monday, remains under investigation, said Shawn Graham, chief deputy with the Wood County Sheriff's Office. Northbound and southbound lanes of W.Va. 2 were closed for about an hour while crews worked at the scene, officials said.
"We have a basic understanding of what we believe happened," Graham said. "But (the accident) is still under investigation."
Graham said charges have not been filed in the incident. Sheriff's deputies and the Wood County Crash Team are working to determine which driver was at fault, he said.
Assistance at the crash scene was provided by the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department, Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department and ambulances from Camden Clark Medical Center, officials said.
Traffic was detoured to Wood County 31 for northbound motorists to go to Williamstown and connect with W.Va. 2, officials on the scene said.
Wood County sheriff's deputy David Tennant is asking for witnesses of the crash to call the sheriff's office at 304-424-1834 with information that might help officials determine the cause, Graham said.
