Joseph Richard Shumway, 83, of Somerset, Ohio, passed away at 9:12 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville.
Joe was born on July 27, 1929 in Parkersburg, W.Va., to the late William E. and Minnie E. Shumway. He was a graduate of Shenandoah University of Dayton, Va., Otterbein College and The Ohio State University. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served overseas near the end of WWII. He loved to travel, visiting 49 of the United States. Joe was a teacher at Central High School in Columbus, Ohio until it closed. He was a member of the Perry County Retired Teachers, and the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58. He and his wife, Dorothy, have lived on their mini farm near Somerset for the past 43 years.
Joe was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his wife, Dorothy; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Tollie Shumway; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Mark Otto; grandchildren, Jacob and Emmi Shumway, Jordan and Ryanna Shumway and Courtney and Matthew Otto; great-grandchildren, Jace and Grace Shumway; sister, Betty J. Atkinson; brother, Charles W. Shumway; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Dr. William L. Snider officiating. Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.
