VIENNA - The Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group is providing a clinic at the Vienna Wal-Mart store to take care of many of those in the community with immediate health needs.
The clinic, which is located at the front of the store near the We're Rolling Pretzel Company, opened in October and includes two exam rooms and three nurse practitioners, said Cherrie Cowan, family nurse practitioner.
"We opened the clinic to take care of things people needed done quickly," she said. "Sometimes when you call your family physician, their schedule is full for the day.

Cherrie Cowan and Kim Ewing, family nurse practitioners with the Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group Clinic at Wal-Mart, go over a recent case. The clinic has been open since October at the Vienna Wal-Mart store. The clinic offers a number of services to get people care quickly.
"With this clinic over here, anyone can come in here and we can send their family physician a record of what they were here for and what we did. Also, we might discover something they need to have additional follow-up on."
A physician is always on call for the clinic, which deals with a number of problems and ailments that are common throughout the community.
"We see things that are pretty simple and straightforward," Cowan said.
The clinic deals with a variety of services including Get Well Services such as the treatment of common illnesses like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergies, asthma, colds, coughs, sinus, rashes, sore throats, sprains and strains, among others. Many of these services run $67 each.
The clinic also offers Stay Well Services including obesity/weight management, smoking cessation, physicals, diabetes checks and cholesterol checks. These services vary from $67 to $79.
The clinic is able to do a number of lab services including glucose checks, serum cholesterol, finger stick mono checks, flu swabs, strep swab, urinalysis and urine pregnancy. These services vary from $4 to $20 each.
"These are the ones we can actually do and give you an idea, right now, on the spot what is happening," Cowan said. "If someone needs additional labs, we can write the order for the lab or x-ray and send them over to the (main offices for the Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group) to get it done."
The clinic also has immunizations for tetanus ($67) and tetanus with adacel ($90).
A price list for the different services is located behind the check-in desk outside of the clinic in the store. Most insurance plans are accepted.
The clinic is electronically connected to the main offices of the Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group so if they see the patients of any of the doctors from the group, their information will be included in their electronic medical record or pull up anything they need to know.
"Anything we do over here automatically goes into the electronic record," Cowan said.
If they see someone who is a patient of a doctor not involved with the Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group, they will fax that doctor the office notes of what the clinic did so the physician can have it for their records.
"We will see anyone from the community," Cowan said.
The clinic's staff can regularly draw from the Mid-Ohio Valley Medical Group if needed.
The clinic is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The last patient is seen 15 minutes prior to closing. Their busier time is usually between 4 and 6 p.m. as people begin getting off work and they stop in on the way home, Cowan said.
"We are here to provide convenience and quality care quickly," she said. "The impact locally has been really positive."
