Marietta traces roots to 1788

Old blends with new in this historic river town that first gained fame as the first permanent settlement of the Northwest Territory. Its location at the confluence of two rivers, the Ohio River and the Muskingum River, as well as its access to railways and byways, has made Marietta a center for business, education, recreation and industry in Southeastern Ohio for centuries.

The city was founded by a Revolutionary War general named Rufus Putnam and a small band of pioneers in 1788. Its rich history has been preserved throughout the downtown business and residential areas where many buildings and homes have surpassed the 100 year mark. Marietta is the county seat of Washington County. It's home to Marietta College, a small private liberal arts college, as well as Washington State Community College. Major industries include manufacturers such as Eramet, Chevron Chemicals, Flexmag and Kardex. Recreation and tourism are also key factors in the local economy.

There also are two hospitals, Marietta Memorial Hospital and Selby General Hospital. The Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce, O'Neill Senior Center, Mid-Ohio Valley Players Theater and the Marietta-Washington County Visitors and Convention Bureau are just some of the other organizations in town.

The city maintains more brick streets than any other Ohio community. The city school system includes Marietta High School, Marietta Middle School and four elementary schools. Many of those elementary schools are located in city's neighborhoods of Harmar, North Hills, Devola, Oak Grove and Reno.

The city's newest housing includes the area's first ever retirement community called Glenwood, and new, upscale housing developments are located on the north edge of the city.
