BOE Funds

Other schools have pressing needs, too

March 3, 2013

We doubt Tuesday’s lightning-quick action by the Wood County Board of Education to give the Parkersburg High School Stadium Committee $700,000 to help with a portion of the repairs to Stadium Field......

The BOE made the right decision. Normally I would be a little suspecious of the Board's action, but under the circumstances they needed to fast track this solution. Sports keep at risk students in school. Sports do play an important part for not only students but also the community as a whole. Parkersburg should be proud of its high school. Few communities have such a facility...Parkersburg High School is such a treasure. It should be cared for and appreciated by all. The football stadium should be the best in the state.

The BOE needs some buisness leaders on it that have the ability to manage the buisness at hand ,not make quick decisions that will trouble the system for years to come. That comes from experience in buisness, something that a lot of people don't have.

New board and new superintendent are needed. First, elect board members who look out for all students' education and not just the the jocks having a place to play; second, hire a superintendent with the backbone to be a real leader.

They could have played at Erickson just as South played at Stadium Field all those years. But having said that, I do not begrudge PHS this money.I just want the distribution of funds to be more even. And I do not just mean the PHS South thing. But this editorial is spot on. There are leaking roofs in many local elementary schools. Organized sports play a very important part in SOME young peoples lives. But as always, the few get all the attention. There are lots of other areas of learning that the BOE could fund that are an important part in ALL students lives. Football, and more specifically PHS football took priority of all the other county needs. As I said I don't mind them getting their funds. As long as all the other REAL needs in county schools are met first. They are not too good to use the other stadium for a year or 2.

organized school sports play a very important part in young peoples lives. It can provide educational opportunities for students to go on to college. And even perhaps become a major league baseball player, such as Nick and Steve Swisher. To ignore the repairs would be foolish as it must be done. I hope the board will give equal consideration to Erickson Stadium when funds are available. If the board did not step forward and quickly, it would have potentially caused the cancellation of football and soccer for the 2013-14 seasons. The board should be complimented.
