@ wildcitykitty, You must be on the payroll as a paid surrogate for the mayors office. It's absurd for you to say that us"whiners" as you put it can't disagree with how we feel things are being done in the city because some of us don't have "business degrees".

The only business degree I need is when I step into the voting booth. Elected officials need to be reminded that they work for the constituents that put them in office.

I don't live in Parkersburg but if I did, I would question these "savings" when there was such a deficit before. Definitely not against city employees (police, firefighters, road crews etc.) getting raises. They work all hours and are on call every night to respond to water line breaks, 911 calls etc. However, once the "savings" has been depleted, where will the money come from? From what I read last week, its seems the city of Parkersburg projected VERY low on how much the user fee would generate because its only February and they have already collected a bulk of what was projected for the year.

DisturbedAgain, I think the frustration amongst those that are angry about this issue is not what the user fee actually costs an individual week,month,year..etc. For those of us those that like to be engaged in local politics and current event's with the city it's easy to see how things get spun at the top level. I think it would be disingenuous for anyone that disagrees to say they don't feel like the city employee's deserve a raise. I think that during some of the hardest economic times since the great depression that the city took it upon itself to put forth an agenda to go after the user fee. Mr.Newell got his way and now claims that through savings there is all of this money to go towards raises. Like I said I think most people are for pay raises but not off of the backs of those who have paid the user fee. It's not the fee itself but the principal of how it was initially sold to the public.

I don't think an honest word has came out of mayor Newell's mouth.we need users fee to keep us afloat now we have money for raises and SUVs for the police department.i would run for city council but I am an honest person and I would do what I tell people that I was going to do. Cut spending lower taxes.

WOW, it seems like some of you have some serious issues. How can a small user fee cause so much uproar. I pay the user fee myself and I do not see it as a major interference. If were were talking about $1,000 a year or so, that would be a different story. If you read the article, it says that money given for raises comes from savings from paying things off early. We were able to pay them off early thanks to the minimal user fee.

I bet that if you were told you were not getting a raise because there was not any money available, I believe you would not be there to long. These employees that do a good job deserve a raise to keep their services and work ethics up.

you are right on Objective. It is all lies. He spins a new story at every new project he has. Sometimes in the same week he goes from we are broke and then we are in the best shape in the cities history under my great rule.

I find this truly offensive. At a time when the regular citizens are getting hit with higher taxes, Newell is tossing out nearly 1 million in pay raises in one year. In the last couple of weeks he discussed home rule where the city could implement a city income tax or a city sales tax, which would indicate he has plans for more new taxes. He tries to mask the pay raises with savings he created, which is smoke and mirrors, as it would appear these are just savings from isolated sources and not year ot year savings or permenant savings. What is the old saying? If you repeate a lie long enough eventually people think it is the truth. This Mayor has been the most tax happy Mayor with the ability to lie the most of any Mayor in history of Parkersburg

Remember all the drama from the Mayor about the 2 million dollar shortfall from the news about St Joe's being bought that fueled the user fee nonsense? Fast forward to now and suddenly there is all of this extra money for raises? With all the extra money Parkersburg could have those self stick fancy brick looking cross walks at every street crossing like they have downtown. So when the city employees get their pay raises the residents can always expect exemplary service, correct? After all with all of the extra money this city should have top notch everything, right?

DudeSmith, the word "Honorable" does not go with the word Newell in any dictionary that I have seen.

Some may wonder why the mayor will keep the user fee after implementation of the 1% sales tax. It's because the sales tax will provide the funding for the mayor's proposed baseball stadium.

The mayor did not mention a city income tax if we were to change to Home Rule. He proposed a 1% sales tax to replace the B & O tax while keeping the User Fee intact.

Mothman: WOW you really are angry. Have you ever considered running for office so you can fix these perceived problems with Parkersburg. It is easy to sit back and complain about those in office, it is another to actually do something about it, other than trying to get a mayor recalled. For the record, I did not vote for Mayor Newell but I do support him because he is our mayor.

I agree, MothMan...if Pburg has so much surplus...I'd say we weren't in such dire straits after all.

Personally, I applaud the Mayor for finding ways to reward our city employees. Agree with me or not, our city employees do a great job with what they have and the city runs pretty smoothly overall. Take a look at the comparable cities in WV, we are more comfortable financially and that can only be accomplished by the employees the city is staffed by.

And get over the user fee. It's here and not going away. I guarantee most waste more than that without realizing it. It serves a legitimate purpose and is here to stay.

If the city has money for pay raises then we dont need the user fee. How many people has gone 2 years without a employees knew what the pay was before they took the job they get cheap insurance and a pension.if they dont like the pay let them get another job somebody would love to have it.
