Comments no longer part of stories
October 1, 2013 - Art Smith
For the last several years readers have been able to comment on most stories that appear on NewsandSentinel.com.
We started the comments to give readers a place to share their views on news stories. Since 2008 readers have left more than 30,000 comments on stories. We had hoped they would stay on topic and discuss in a rationally way what was being reported.
Most people on our site use a variety of pseudonyms when leaving comments. It would seem that because of this many felt they could disregard common decency and act like online bullies.
Name calling of people quoted in the stories, insulting of fellow posters, the attempted use of foul language — none of it should happen, and it will not happen here.
So today the comments on stories are gone.
We still want to hear what you have to say; we just want to hear it in the form of a letter to the editor. Letters to the editors reach all our readers, including those in print, online and on mobile devices. Letters to the editor can be submitted online; in fact you can submit one at this link. Our goal is to turn those who commented online into letter to the editor writers.
You can still tell everyone what you think, the only difference is now, they will know who you are.
