Step away from the screen

November 8, 2012 - Art Smith
It doesn’t seem like you can pick up a newspaper anymore without reading about the latest tablet or smartphone about to be released.

Apple recently released the iPad mini and promptly sold several million of them the first weekend.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a desktop/laptop/tablet/smartphone user. I think all the devices are great. I enjoy working on them, and I enjoy playing on them.

I just think people are growing too dependent on them and are wasting huge amounts of time staring at them.

I know people who can’t afford heat for their homes but think nothing of paying $100 a month data plans. I’ve witnessed people checking Facebook while they are eating dinner with other people. I’ve seen teenagers sitting together in a group not talking but texting people who are elsewhere, or worse yet, texting people in the same room so they can talk about people sitting right next to them.

All this is leading to a hyper connected society that does not know how to communicate with one another.

A friend of mine thinks all the devices may be the downfall of our society. He may be right.

Step away from the desktop/laptop/tablet/smartphone device and have a conversation with the person in the room with you. Go ahead — it won’t hurt you.
