Kids' book delivers voting lesson

November 5, 2012 - Amy Phelps
Kids can experience an election in "Amelia Bedelia's First Vote" by Herman Parish with illustrations by Lynne Avril.

When Amelia Bedelia runs into the principal (literally and he escorts her to the nurse) they get to discuss the importance of voting on the rules of the school. Since her class is learning about elections, he suggests they come up with a few ideas about running the school and vote on them. The kids come up with a lot of different ideas and receive ballots so they can vote. Which idea will win?

This is a good introduction to the concept of elections for young children.

"Amelia Bedelia's First Vote" is published by Greenwillow Books. It is $16.99 and is for ages 4 to 8.
