South mat job and baseball
July 13, 2012 - Jay Bennett
As much as I'd like to inform the public of what's going on with the Parkersburg South wrestling job, I know nothing more now than I did two weeks ago when I went on vacation.
Surely, sometime in the near future we might at least have a list of candidates or know who the hire is going to be.
Now, onward to the second half of the baseball season. Sure, today might be one of those "scary" Friday the 13ths, but for baseball fans it's the day where the rest of the long 162-game season gets back into clear focus.
As for my main American League only fantasy team it's been a rough campaign to say the least. Following the auction, each squad has a 10-man pitching staff. My partner and I not only have had to deal with three of our pitchers being sent to Class AAA, but three others — Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino of Kansas City along with Kyle Drabek of Toronto — already have had Tommy John surgery. It's no wonder we're mired in 6th place in our 11-team league.
Oh well, there's always next year. At least that's the old saying. However, for the Pittsburgh Pirates it appears it finally could be time to focus on this year.
Yes, the team which hasn't had a winning record since I was a senior in high school is not only leading the National League's Central Division, but the Pirates are 11 games above the .500 plateau.
That means the Pirates need just 34 wins in the second half to finally snap that long and awful streak of consecutive losing campaigns. I'm thinking about making a countdown calendar here in the office to keep track of the victories Pittsburgh needs as they get them to reach 82 wins. However, I'm not sure tonight's road game with James McDonald taking on the host Brewers and Zack Greinke is going to end up in the win column.
