Planning family fun events
At Downtown PKB, a big part of what we do is hold events. With the cancellation of all our events thus far in 2020, we have been missing the community and are anxious to bring some normalcy to downtown. The guidelines for holding a safe event are extensive, however, after doing research and discussing options with our board, hosting a drive-in movie event seemed to meet all the criteria.
In August we began to plan our drive-in movie and selected Marvels The Avengers. Immediately we had area businesses stepping up to sponsor and partner with us to bring this fun evening to the community. We would like to thank the O’Neill Center for their partnership; as well as our sponsors — CareSource, United Bank, United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, Peoples Bank, Event Designs, ITech, Bosley Rental & Supply, and the City of Parkersburg. We will be setting up our temporary outdoor drive-in theater at the parking lots at 4th & Avery Street in downtown Parkersburg on Sept. 26.
The idea of a night out under the stars was well received, and within two weeks the event sold out. We are excited about the public’s response and we cannot wait to watch this movie on the big screen.
Keeping with the idea of social distancing, and after deciding to cancel our annual family-friendly Halloween event, we knew we needed to celebrate this spooky holiday in some way. A highlight to those who love Halloween is picking out or creating their costume and experiencing the fun of dressing up for family and friends.
In place of Monster Mash, we will be holding a Virtual Halloween Costume Contest. The way it will work is from October 26 through October 31, dress up in your cutest, scariest, or most original costume. Then take a selfie or have someone snap your picture. Email your photo to firstname.lastname@example.org. by 11 p.m. on October 31. With your entry include the first and last name of the person in the photo, along with the age category. We will accept only one entry per person.
A panel of judges will review submissions and choose the winners. Winners will be announced the week of November 2, and prizes will be awarded. To review contest rules, go to our Facebook page (@downtownpkb) or to our website (downtownpkb.com).
Thank you to CareSource, United Bank, and the United Way Alliance of the MOV for their sponsorship of this event.
