Suicide Squad coming to big screen
Will Smith may be the biggest name in the just-announced cast of “Suicide Squad,” the 2016 movie based on DC Comics’ team of super villains, but with the Joker, Harley Quinn and perhaps Lex Luthor in the mix, he won’t be playing the most famous character.
Smith is portraying Deadshot, an integral member of most incarnations of the Suicide Squad, aka Task Force X, since it was revamped in the ’80s as a black ops government strike force composed of villains looking to shave a little time off their sentences … if they can survive the missions.
Originally called the Suicide Squadron, a military unit battling dinosaurs in a storyline known as “The War That Time Forgot,” the concept was eventually revived as a group of monster-hunters. The villains-doing-government-dirty-work version didn’t debut until the 1980s, during an event called “Legends.”
The mortality rate for the Squad was established early. On their first mission, hulking team member Blockbuster bit the dust battling a monstrous alien creature. Another character, Mindboggler, was offed in the second issue of their ongoing series.
I’m not sure the core team announced last week will have the same problem. Certainly, the studio wouldn’t want to keep Smith from returning for any sequels.
Deadshot was part of the original team, staying on after others were released, due to what his psychiatrist/love interest theorized was a death wish. An expert marksman who has tangled with Batman, he’s been everything from a tortured antihero to a fill-in-the-blank hitman.
Both the monster-hunting version and the ’80s Suicide Squad teams were led by a soldier named Rick Flag, who will be played in the movie by Tom Hardy in his second major DC Comics role (he was Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises”).
Captain Boomerang is a Flash villain, who stayed with the ’80s version of the Squad until it disbanded. Down on his luck, he played a pivotal role in the dark DC series “Identity Crisis” that ultimately led to his demise, but, like so many comic characters, he came back. The character is apparently dropping the “Captain” part of his codename for the film, in which he’ll be played by Jai Courtney (“Divergent”).
Another charter squad member in the film is Enchantress, a woman with magical powers and an evil alter ego she can’t always control. She’ll be portrayed by model Cara Delevingne.
Most versions of the Squad from the ’80s on were assembled by Amanda Waller, who was played by Angela Bassett in the 2011 “Green Lantern” movie. But that movie was poorly received, and it looks like it won’t be a part of the canon going forward, so the Squad will likely need a new “Wall.” “Variety” has reported Oprah Winfrey is among those being considered.
Jared Leto, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for “Dallas Buyers Club,” is the new Joker, but it remains to be seen how big his role will turn out to be. The character’s never really been associated with the Squad, and he could appear in more of a cameo/flashback role tied to his sidekick/love interest Harley Quinn.
Harley’s been a central figure for the latest version of the Squad under DC’s line-wide New 52 reboot. Actress Margot Robbie, who turned heads in last year’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” will bring the psychotic-yet-sometimes-sympathetic character to life.
Jesse Eisenberg, who is playing Lex Luthor in 2016’s “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” is also rumored to be appearing, but that has not been confirmed. Like the Joker, he’s not a traditional Suicide Squad member.
