Letter to the Editor: It takes a village

The Republicans have been wringing their hands about immigrants pouring into this country since President Biden became president. Of course, we have had an “immigration problem” for a long time, but with conditions growing increasingly difficult in South American countries, we have more and more desperate people seeking a way to survive.
President Biden sent the “U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021” to Congress on Jan. 20, 2021, his first day in office to “responsibly manage and secure our border, keep our families and communities safe, and better manage migration across the Hemisphere.” Several other immigration bills have been sent to Congress to no avail. Not only is the border broken but Congress is broken as well when it comes to immigration and that is their responsibility.
Immigrants have always been willing to take jobs that Americans do not want. We desperately need workers on our farms to harvest our crops. We need workers to rebuild our homes that have been destroyed by fire and flood. We need truck drivers to move everything to where it is needed. We need restaurant, hotel and health-care workers, etc., etc. A lot of women cannot return to work because of the shortage and expense of daycare. Are we paying higher prices because we don’t have enough workers willing or able to fill all those low-wage jobs?
Our congressmen and women seem to be more interested in getting re-elected than in doing the people’s business. Instead of blaming President Biden for what we don’t like in this country, why don’t we elect those that will accept the responsibility for which they were elected? You know, it takes more than one man or one woman, “it takes a village” with people working together to solve our problems with a little common sense thrown in.
