A look at letter’s points

I’ve mostly retired from letter writing and have resolved not to get incensed by cranks and climate change deniers who reject the rational belief system I embrace. However, I must push back against an extraordinary letter that appeared in last weekend’s edition, not because of its massive offense against truth but due its scurrilous charges against a good person I respect.

The letter headlined “The sky is not falling” opines that:

1) Climate change is “contrived” and “is a form of attempted control over … ‘ordinary’ people.” This notwithstanding a sigma level scientific consensus to the contrary.

2) All anthropogenic climate change believers are atheists. They are not. The ranks of Mid-Ohio Valley Climate Action are replete with Unitarians, Quakers, Catholics and Protestants. The correct dichotomy would be level of education, not level of religiosity.

3) The primary logical reason that anthropogenic climate change is not real is because God is in control. The author apparently lacks the self-awareness to appreciate the fact that all he is doing here is equating his own beliefs with those of God.

4) That her newspaper’s “days are numbered.” I hope not, but it is true that print media is struggling to survive. I read my additions on-line and commend the editor for the exemplary digital product her people have created.

Irrational people inevitably make poor writers. Fragmented focus is their primary tell. When the author digresses into a screed against President Biden’s overture to Venezuela to sell us more oil, he betrays his lack of credibility.

I don’t aspire to disaffect the author of his opinions. I do wish to fault him for his unfounded accusations that the editor will only print pro-climate change material from us atheists, however. MOVCA members have written MANY letters over our 7 years in our effort to SAVE THE GRANDCHILDREN by mobilizing the local community against the dangers and URGENCY of climate change.

Initially we had the same problems getting everything printed that the letter writer cited. However, we discovered by communicating with the editor that when one of our letters was not printed it was only because she had not been aware of it. When that problem was corrected the letters were printed. Additionally, she advised us to always call to make sure she was aware of our letter. I advise last weekend’s writer to do the same. His letters are a riot.
