A dangerous delusion

The U.S. Republican Party and what is considered the political right in the U.S. today can no longer be considered a part of sane, rational discourse when it comes to policymaking and cultural, political and economic issues. The only thing I know to say to these folks is, “I’m sorry.”

I’m sorry that you consider the complete and accurate teaching of the history of the United States and the Western world White-shaming. It’s called accountability and the responsibility to do better, which one cannot do without truthful and well-rounded education. I’m sorry you feel that whether or not women become pregnant and carry to term is somehow your business–it isn’t. I’m sorry that you feel that you should be allowed to discriminate in things like employment, housing and public accommodations on the basis of things like sexual orientation and gender identity because of your religiously motivated hate–you shouldn’t, and a body of law is slowly being built to prevent you from doing so.

I’m sorry you feel that the United States of America is a Christian nation (aka a theocracy)–it isn’t. The U.S. is a secular constitutional democratic-republic and has always been, and I as an atheist Humanist have all of the same rights, liberties, privileges and responsibilities of citizenship as an evangelical Christian or otherwise religious person.

I’m sorry that you do not understand or are willfully ignorant of the atmospheric physics and other science conclusively proving that anthropogenic (human-caused) global climate change is real, happening now, our fault, and severely urgent. I’m sorry that you do not understand or are willfully ignorant about Darwinian evolutionary theory, aka the basis of modern human biology. All are entitled to their opinions, but not their own facts, and these are settled facts. By the way, an example of a scientific theory is the theory of gravity. Please look up the definition of a scientific theory before dismissing climate change or human evolution as “just theories.”

I’m sorry that many of you appear willing to threaten the health and safety of more Americans, when over 600,000 and counting have died, because of your refusal to vaccinate for non-medical reasons. Vaccines teach the body’s immune system to fight certain pathogens and then are expelled and they are far safer and more effective, when administered correctly (i.e. both shots when two shots are required), than unvaccinated exposure to said pathogens. This should not be controversial.

We’ve got serious problems in this country and world, and we need serious people to solve them. A party that would even consider running a Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, or Donald Trump is not that party. Democrats are far from perfect, and I am not a registered Democrat, but in a two-party dominant system there is only one major party in 2021 that is even willing to deal in reality instead of living in a fantasy realm of QAnon, the “deep state,” and other verifiably false, conspiratorial nonsense about the 2020 presidential elections and more. The dangers of this for our government, society and even our ability to continue to safely inhabit this planet cannot be overstated.
