Let’s fix what’s broken

Dennis Prager published an opinion piece in The Epoch Times on June 8, 2021, titled “The Single Best Thing Americans Can Do to Retake America.” In his view, the best thing we can do is remove our children from the public school system.

My family, from my parents through my own grandchildren, has never known any other form of education. Public schools prepared me for success in my military service and later for the academic rigors of West Virginia University. Public schools successfully prepared each of my children for the economic and social complexities inherent in our society.

The events of the last eighteen months have exposed many weaknesses and flaws in our public schools. Who knows what damage mandated masks, distance learning and social distancing required of children as young as five has done to our future generations? Mistakes have certainly been made in many of our established institutions.

The emails now being published regarding what Dr. Fauci knew and when he knew it, are certainly damaging to our confidence in our healthcare policymaking infrastructure. The trillions of dollars being borrowed and spent are certainly damaging to our economic future and to the confidence we have in our elected leaders. The lack of honest investigative reporting and the willingness to fact check and censor dissenting opinions has certainly done damage to our legacy media.

The answer to the damage done to our institutions is not abandonment. The answer is citizen action. For too long, many of us have lived our lives raising our families, building our careers, and generally enjoying the freedoms our forefathers bequeathed to us. I had never attended a board of education meeting or city council meeting until this year. Like many of you, I had confidence that the people we put in charge of these areas of our culture were performing their duties to the best of their abilities. I always believed that most had the interests of their students, patients, constituents or viewers at the forefront of their decision making.

The days of blind or casual faith in our institutions must end. We must work with our elected officials to ensure we do not compromise our moral or social values for government financial inducements. All of these institutions exist to serve We The People. Let’s not abandon them, let’s try to fix them. Together!
