Getting back to ‘normal’

While a lot of us are starting to relax just a bit with the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris, it is disconcerting nevertheless to still hear Mr. Trump insist that he won the 2020 presidential election. It is even more disturbing to hear about the number of people that believe him, are afraid to contradict him or are ready to overthrow our democracy in order to bring him back to power.

The truth is still the truth. The American people elected President Biden and Vice-President Harris. The insurrection on Jan. 6 to stop the peaceful transfer of power was carried out by Trump supporters inspired by Mr. Trump and resulted in several deaths and injuries and the trashing of the capitol. We saw it live on television — the Trump flags and banners — and we heard their threats against Vice President Pence and the leadership of congress. We could not believe that our government would delay in sending help for 3 hours — thanks again to Mr. Trump.

We are breathing a little easier as our government is once again working for the people by passing the $1.9 trillion COVID Stimulus Plan — supported by a majority of Americans. Although Mr. Trump called the COVID virus a hoax, he is credited with Operation Warp Speed, the federal effort to develop and distribute a COVID-19 vaccine that he and Melania received in January. President Biden is working very hard to use the power of the federal government to get most of us vaccinated (herd immunity) by summer. But to get back to normal, we must continue to wear masks and get the vaccine as soon as it is available to us.

The Supreme Court has validated the 2020 election once again by striking down the latest of the challenges brought by our former president but as long as Trump insists that he won the election and as long as Republicans in Congress are afraid to contradict him, and as long as social media continues to spread this false narrative, we will continue to have our capitol building and our congress men and women protected by barbed wire and troops. And as long as we refuse to wear masks and get vaccinated, our loved ones will continue to die.

Of course, we all just want to “get back to normal” by having a rational leader that works for all of us whether we voted for him or not and we look forward to being proud Americans again.
