Stop Title X gag rule

I am sending this letter on behalf of the Jackson County Democratic Executive Committee to urge Sen. Joe Manchin to stop the implementation of the Title X “gag rule” recently released by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. This rule would negatively affect health care for millions of people, the majority of which are low income.

Title X was created to ensure that everyone, regardless of their income level or if they had insurance, had access to basic reproductive health care, including cancer screenings, birth control and exams. But, this program, which was created to help those in need, is being attacked.

The released rule will prevent health care professionals in Title X facilities from discussing all available health care options with their patients. This would mean that those patients, who have nowhere else to turn because of their financial problems, would not receive all of the available information about their medical care.

Not only does this rule threaten medical credibility and attack the doctor/patient relationship, but it also violates free speech. Most damaging, this rule threatens to defund any Title X facility that does not abide by this “gag rule.” This could severely hamper access to health care facilities. We cannot allow doctors and nurses to be threatened if they give their patients the information needed to make the best possible choices for their health care.

Senator Manchin has always stood up for affordable access to health care and for those who are less fortunate. I ask that he do so again by working to keep this rule from being implemented.
