Cartoon went beyond satire

I am writing with amazement and frustration at the irresponsible liberties The News and Sentinel took on the Thursday, Aug. 21, opinion page. In the bottom left corner is a satirical cartoon of a black man with a look demonstrating any range of emotion from fear to confusion, wearing a T-shirt with a large target emblazoned on it with the words “I went to Ferguson, Missouri and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.”

I understand political satire, and further understand the artists attempt to make a point that it is dangerous to be black and live in Ferguson. However, it is this very one sided, close minded, racial line drawing, jump to conclusions mindset that leads to fueling hate and distrust. No matter the outcome of the investigation, you were wrong for printing a picture worth a thousand hateful words.

Shame on you for promoting such ideas; thereby missing an opportunity to do some good in a bad situation! With great freedoms comes a greater responsibility, you failed.
