GSC bowlers were overlooked

In his Letter to the Editor, printed in the Sunday, Jan. 5th edition of the Parkersburg News, Joey Smith noted that Ryan Patterson’s bowling accomplishments at McKendree University was the “first time a Parkersburg bowler has been on the national collegiate stage for bowling.” This is in error as Glenville State College’s bowling team won the 1976 NAIA Bowling Championship.

The team was made up of seniors, Sam Ferrell and Tom Newberry, along with freshmen, Mark Smith and Dave Twyman, “all from the Parkersburg area” and freshman, Mick Hickman from Dunbar. This would be the 9-year-old bowling team’s third trip to the national finals but this time they won the National Championship. This information is available in the college’s Sports Hall of Fame section of its website.
