Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the Wild Wonderful Good Sams camping chapter of West Virginia, which put together blessing bags as part of a community service project that delivered more than 40 items placed in 2-gallon bags for WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center to give to those in need. Sometimes it’s the little things that make a difference — and become a very big thing for those who are struggling. Thank you, folks.

UP: To news of a new monument to be added to the memorials at Marietta’s Gold Star Park, this one to draw awareness to the those who are fighting the Silent Battle with post traumatic stress disorder and thoughts of suicide. “Our mission is to draw awareness to our military men and women who fight the ‘silent battle,’ suffering from the variations of hardships as a direct result of PTSD and/or suicide ideation, and to create an environment to allow those and their family members to begin or continue the process of healing,” said Jared Smith, past president of the Ohio State Association of Veterans Service Commissioners and a member of the Washington County Veterans Service Commission. There is still an opportunity to support this project; and those who contribute a minimum donation of $2,500 have the option of adding a name to the granite.

UP: To the Mid-Ohio Valley Community Emergency Response Team, which was recognized recently by the West Virginia Emergency Management Division for its support of pandemic response and other safety efforts over the last two years. “Since 2011, Mid-Ohio Valley CERT program and its members have been of great service to their community,” said G.E. McCabe, director of the West Virginia Emergency Management Division. “They conduct preparedness outreach and education to help residents be informed and prepared for emergencies. They participate in disaster preparedness, training and drills and assist with local response and recovery efforts.”
