Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To West Virginia University at Parkersburg’s effort to increase its reserve fund, despite the challenges of the past few years. WVUP President Chris Gilmer said last week the fund now sits at $20 million — a 54% increase since 2018. The fund was built up “through responsible and conservative budgeting and spending while still managing to provide everything that our community has needed to carry out our educational mission and much of what it has wanted to enhance that mission,” he said. The effort should serve as a model for other educational institutions and organizations.

UP: To word that economic development announcements at the start of the 2022 West Virginia Regular Legislative Session have sparked inquiries from other businesses who are taking a fresh look at the state — including the Mid-Ohio Valley. Employers do not usually operate in isolation. Those who have already chosen to bring jobs to the Mountain State likely have partners who will now give us a look. The prospect is certainly encouraging.

UP: To those who continue to work to both preserve Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and fulfill his mission. Today we remember a man who knew he would not get to “the promised land” with those he encouraged to press on. We must ask ourselves what he would say if he looked at us today and realized just how very far we still have to go.
