Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To Wood County Commissioner Robert Tebay for expressing the dilemma felt by most responsible politicians. “Everyday it seems like we have someone here who wants us to do something or fund something,” he said. “We just don’t have that revenue to allow us to do so.” Too many people think of governments as having bottomless coffers — free money. Kudos to Tebay and the rest of the commission for realizing spending, no matter how much they might want to, cannot exceed income.

UP: To the parents of four bundles of joy (three at Marietta Memorial Hospital, one at WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center) who let us share in their special day while welcoming their New Year’s babies into the world. They may be about to get as much sleep as the average New Year’s Eve partier … every night, for months … but the struggle is temporary. Congratulations, folks!

UP: To the local churches and other organizations who hosted New Year’s dinners, and other such gatherings over this past holiday season. Hundreds of people had happier holidays because of the hard work done by volunteers who pull together these feasts. They are fantastic ways to celebrate our valley’s spirit of community, and desire to take care of ALL those around us.
