Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To Van Devender Middle School students Jordan Mayhew, Nate McPeak, Meredith Poole and Emily Winter for their accomplishments in completing the grade-level i-Ready programs in English and math. Eighth-grader Mayhew completed the math program, while eighth-grader Poole and seventh-grader (yes, seventh) Winter completed the eighth-grade English language arts portion of the program. Eighth-grader McPeak completed both the math and ELA portions. Principal Darlene Parsons is correct that “to have students who push themselves beyond classroom learning is so exciting,” and we join her in congratulating these four on their hard work.

UP: To Tom Phillips, who was honored this week with the 2019 Heart of Our Community Award, by the YMCA of Parkersburg and its partners. Phillips is a level 5 coach who has worked with the Marietta YMCA Marlins and Parkersburg YMCA Sharks swim teams.

UP: To efforts by U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., to increase the amount of U.S. Economic Development Administration grant funding headed toward West Virginia. “They showed me this is all the dollars you’re getting for West Virginia for EDA, and I just looked at it and I said I’m sorry, but that’s not enough,” Capito said. Now, the most recent announcement is for eight projects, totalling $7,049,375. Well done, to Capito, and the rest of our Congressional delegation.
