Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To Parkersburg South High School’s speech and debate team, which has earned charter membership in the National Speech and Debate Association because of its more than 50 degrees for outstanding participation in speech and debate activities, over the past three years. “It’s a goal we’ve been working toward for a long time,” said teacher adviser for the Speaking Patriots Michelle Talbott. “It’s a prestigious recognition.” Congratulations, folks. Well done.

UP: To the opportunities available to our local students, such as the possibility for a Wirt County High School graduate, Devin Fetty, to spend two weeks this summer studying in Italy through the culinary program at Hocking Technical College. Fetty, who says “I’d like to become an American master chef” one day, has a chance to study in both the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Piedmont Region.

UP: To Waterford High School ag students and members of the FFA, who presented their annual free community lunch — the Waterford FFA Hog Roast — to thank everyone for their support of the program throughout the year. As Greg Antill of Marietta noted “What they teach in shop and ag, those are things you are going to need. And there’s more to it. It’s for city kids as well as country kids. (FFA is) more than just animals. It’s public speaking. They have that Parli-Pro program for running meetings, they’ve got leadership instruction.” In other words, they learn how to operate in the real world.
