Christmas: Today is a day for joy and light

There is a reason we celebrate this glorious day with lights draped over our Christmas trees and illuminating our houses — whether it be strings of electric bulbs, candles or just the glow of a warm fire in the fireplace; it is our humble attempt to remind ourselves of the bright star that signified an even greater Light coming into the world more than two millennia ago.

Today, most Christians celebrate the coming of the Christ child — the hope, love and joy that cast aside our darkness. We celebrate, in part, by giving each other gifts — again, as a reminder of that great Gift we have all been given. We celebrate by gathering our family close and spreading as much love and joy as we can. We sing, we eat — we enjoy life.

May we all have a merry Christmas, today; and carry that joy — and light — with us throughout the year.

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!” — Charles Dickens

“Christmas in Bethlehem. The ancient dream: a cold, clear night made brilliant by a glorious star, the smell of incense, shepherds and wise men falling to their knees in adoration of the sweet baby, the incarnation of perfect love.” — Lucinda Franks

“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” — Winston Churchill
