Red Cross: Donations, volunteers needed for organization

“Our volunteers are the best people in the world,” said Sharon Kesselring, executive director of the American Red Cross of Northwestern West Virginia.

For those looking for an opportunity to do something good, to help others, and maybe pitch in on a specific need like flood relief, the Red Cross presents an amazing opportunity. It is a well-oiled machine when it comes to serving those in need. In Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties, after last month’s devastating flooding, the Red Cross jumped right in (they were probably in place before the National Guard arrived).

“We have provided to date 650 cleanup kits and 3,300 other supplies … We have also delivered 8,000 meals and snacks throughout that time,” Kesselring said. In addition to providing shelter services at Hundred High School for a week after the flooding, caseworkers and volunteers are still working with those who will be struggling to recover from this disaster.

And that is why the Red Cross needs you.

Donations and volunteers keep the nonprofit alive. From blood donation to efforts that “help people prepare for, respond to and recover from flood and other disasters,” the Red Cross could not do its job without the community members who lend a hand.

Those who have been looking for a way to help, especially in flood-stricken counties, but wanted to be sure they were working with an organization that will actually get something done, there is no need to look further than the Red Cross. Opportunities to give and volunteer are everywhere. Go to redcrosswv.org or call 304-485-7311 to find out how.
