Food Funds

Local folks involved in farmers markets, community garden projects and food banks should take a look at the request for applications from the federal Local Foods, Local Places program.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Transportation, Appalachian Regional Commission, Delta Regional Authority and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials work together on this program, which is designed to improve the general health of communities, revitalize neighborhoods and spotlight the benefits of locally sourced foods.

If a community is selected for the program, Local Foods, Local Places provides technical experts and support to help build a “highly beneficial local food system.”

Goals of the program include boosting economic opportunities for local farmers and businesses; improving access to healthy foods and increasing childhood wellness; and creating walkable, healthy neighborhoods.

Last year two West Virginia communities were selected for the program – Williamson, in Mingo County; and Wheeling. Wheeling sought help in developing its Vineyard Hill into a productive area that would help create a local food hub. Williamson wanted help in establishing a Health Innovation Hub that brings locally grown/raised foods to market.

There is no reason some of the similar work being done here in Wood County should not be counted as just as worthy of federal resources. Applications for Local Foods, Local Places assistance can be made through Sept. 15. Community members who share the goals set forth by Local Foods, Local Places should put their heads together quickly and make a pitch.
