Floyd E. “Gene” Combs
Floyd E. “Gene” Combs, age 97, went to be with the Lord on July 11, 2025. He was born March 27, 1928, at Ripley, West Virginia, son of the late Daniel Floyd and Louisa Rebecca Combs. He had lived in Deltona, Florida, since 1967. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1967 as a Mustang Lieutenant after serving 23 years. Since his military retirement Gene worked at various professions, including Inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and in real estate as a Realtor. He was a life member of VFW Post 8093 in DeBary, DAV Chapter 30 in Sanford and the Military Officers Association.
During his 23-year naval career Gene served with the Seabees on Okinawa in 1945-46, in the Naval Amphibious Forces during the Korean conflict and in Vietnam as cargo operations officer at the port of Da Nang in 1966. He was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation, US Army Commendation, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and four good conduct awards.
He is survived by his four sons, Robert of DeLand, FL, William of Deland, Thomas of Deltona, Mark of Crimora, VA and one daughter, Terrie Mann of Clemson, SC; fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and one sister, Glenna Poling of Mineral Wells, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda J. Combs, and two brothers, Edgar and Raymond. He enjoyed working with the USS Begor Association, flower gardening and growing roses.
Services will be held graveside at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Mineral Wells, WV, at 10 a.m. on July 23, 2025, with military honors. The family kindly requests that, instead of sending flowers, donations be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
