Gretta Mae Bayne

Gretta Mae Bayne, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 92, in Parkersburg, WV. Born on February 17, 1932, in Decatur, OH, Gretta’s life was characterized by her unwavering faith, keen intelligence, and boundless love for her family and community.

Gretta was the beloved wife of the late James Bayne, with whom she shared 74 years of devoted marriage after marrying the boy next door in 1949. She was a cherished mother to her daughters, Monica Barrett and Jane Lea Gordon (Joshua), and a doting grandmother to James Barrett, Jill Behnke (Bob), and Mae Lea Gordon. Her legacy continued to flourish through her great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Barrett and Colton Behnke. Gretta also held a special place in her heart for her sister-in-law, Patty Rathburn, as well as her many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Belpre High School in 1950, Gretta dedicated herself to a career as an Executive Secretary for many years, ultimately retiring from General Electric, in 1990. Retirement did not slow her down; instead, she poured her energy into nurturing the next generations, helping to raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the same love and care she had always shown.

A passionate follower of Jesus Christ, Gretta was a faithful member of Mullen Memorial Baptist Church. Her musical talent graced many a service as she played the piano with grace and devotion. Her home was a haven of fellowship and learning, hosting Bible Study Fellowship for many years, where she guided and inspired those around her through her deep understanding of faith.

Gretta’s love for nature was evident in her pursuit of horticulture. She earned her Master Gardener Certificate through The Ohio State University extension office in Marietta and volunteered her time and expertise in the Belpre in Bloom program, contributing to the beautification of her city. Her green thumb and her dedication to the environment left a lasting impact on the community she so dearly loved.

Her artistic talent was also displayed in her needlepoint, a craft at which she excelled and found great joy. As a member of the Stitching Angels club, she shared her passion and skill, creating intricate and beautiful works that were treasured by all who received them.

Those who knew Gretta will remember her as the epitome of selflessness. Her intelligence shone through in every conversation, every decision, and every act of kindness. She was a guiding light, a source of wisdom and comfort to her family and friends. Her loving nature was the foundation upon which her family grew and became a testament to the power of love and compassion.

As we bid farewell to Gretta, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, and the countless seeds of kindness she planted in the lives of everyone around her. She has left this world richer for her presence, and though she will be greatly missed, her light will never fade.

Gretta’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Linda Davis, and the staff at Wyngate Assisted Living for taking such excellent care of their beloved matriarch.
