Jimmy Dayton Smith
Jimmy Dayton Smith, 87, of Medina, West Virginia, was called to eternal rest on August 19, 2024. Born on July 17, 1937, in Jackson County, WV, he was the son of the late Delbert Elsworth Smith and Edith Learene Brown.
Jim was a devoted husband to his wife, Faye (Mullins) Smith, and a loving father to Judy Marty (Joe), Melanie Casto (Tim), and Susan Smith-Irvin (JR). He was a cherished papaw to his five grandchildren; Jennifer Kidd (Ryan), Jessica Resnick (Jeff), Michael Casto (Sam), Melissa Heyer (Cody), and Ryan Irvin, and a very proud “Papaw Smith” to his twelve great-grandchildren; Benjamin, Kathryn, Jenna, Jillian, Aaron, Jamal, Will, Amelia, Henry, George, Scarlett, and Dorothy.
Known for his kindness and outspoken nature, Jim made a lasting impact on everyone he met. He was a gentle and compassionate man who was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbors. An avid outsdoorsman, Jim loved hunting and fishing, but most of all he cherished his family and friends and time spent with them. Family gatherings always included at least one or two entertaining stories from his youth. Jim was a faithful member of Beech Grove Church where he found great solace and community.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Roush Funeral Home, 205 S. Richie Avenue, Ravenswood, WV, followed by interment at Independence Cemetery in Sandyville, WV. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Simpson Cemetery Fund (c/o Larry Franklin, 5762 Medina Road, Ravenswood, WV 26164) in honor of Jim’s grandparents, Letha Elia and W.D. Brown, who raised him during much of his childhood, and are buried there.
Jim’s legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him.
