Oct. 1

* Deputy White was dispatched to Beach Drive, in Belpre, to a report of domestic violence. Dispatch advised Brenda Bartges called stating her husband, William Bartges, choked her and was armed with a pocket knife, brass knuckles, and was highly intoxicated. Deputy White arrived on scene finding Brenda and William on the front patio. William was visibly intoxicated and stated that nothing had happened. Brenda stated William grabbed her by the throat and choked her. Brenda also stated that William had a pocket knife on him, and may still have brass knuckles on his person as well. William was then placed under arrest and taken to the patrol vehicle. William continued to deny assaulting Brenda, stating she was crying wolf again. Brenda advised when she got home from court earlier today, William was intoxicated and continued to ask her what happened in court, being the grand jury she attended from a previous domestic violence charge on William where she is the victim. Brenda would not answer William and went to a neighbor’s to visit. Brenda reports going home after about an hour and found William asleep. William soon woke up and continued asking Brenda about court. William then put brass knuckles on his fist, and punched the wall twice, demanding to know what happened in court. William then threw the brass knuckles on the ground and Brenda grabbed them, which led to William grabbing Brenda by the throat, choking her. Brenda felt at this time that he was trying to kill her. Brenda was able to slap William’s hand away from her and fled the home to call for help. William followed Brenda outside, and took the brass knuckles back from her, hiding them inside the residence. William Edward Bartges Jr., 46, was charged with domestic violence, and transported to the Washington County Jail for processing.
