Wood County Sheriff

PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Sheriff’s Office released the following reports:

Jan. 27

* A deputy spoke with the complainant of Kathy Lane who reported that person(s) had shot the window out on the driver side of his truck. He stated it looked like a BB hole was in the window. He just wished to have the incident documented.

* A deputy while traveling northbound on I-77 near the 171mm noted a vehicle approaching from the rear at a very high rate of speed. As the vehicle passed the deputy, the deputy “bumped” the siren in an attempt to warn the vehicle to slow down. The driver looked over at the deputy and continued to pass. A traffic stop was conducted and a citation was issued to Jason Daniel Graham, 46, of Eighth Avenue, for speeding 79 mph in a 70 mph zone.

* Chester Earl Sholes Jr., 58, of Hayeslett Lane, was escorted to magistrate court on a warrant for DUI and safety equipment and requirements for motorcyclist. He was given a PR bond and released after processing. This warrant originated after a motorcycle crash at the intersection of DuPont Road and U.S. 50 on July 2, 2024, and was issued through the Wood County Sheriff Office.

* Traffic stop conducted and a citation was issued to Joshua Allen Miller, 41, of Reed Street, for no operators.

* Citation issued to Earlene Marie Colucci, 71, of Harris Highway, for speeding 92 mph in a 70 mph zone.

* Deputies responded to Hickory Street in reference to a domestic in progress. The victim/complainant stated that his son had punched him and wanted him removed from the residence. Deputies observed the victim/complainant having a busted lip. Joshua Richard Knopp, 35, of Dempsie Avenue, for domestic battery. He was transported to the Holding Center for processing and placed pending his arraignment.

* A deputy responded to Lake Washington Road in reference to a possible structure fire. The occupants had already gotten out of the home and EMS personnel located the problem, a battery operated bicycle had caught fire. Fire units ventilated the residence to clear the smoke.

* A traffic stop was conducted after the vehicle was observed with an expired registration (5/2024). A citation was issued to Barbara Lynn Cates, 50, of Dickens Drive, for no insurance and improper registration.

Jan. 28

* A citation issued to 17-year-old female of Columbia Avenue for speeding 95 mph in a 70 mph zone and warned on the expired registration.

* A deputy responded to Staunton Turnpike in reference to a vehicle crash. Upon arrival the vehicle was observed to be on its top in the eastbound lane of Staunton Turnpike. The driver stated she was traveling eastbound on Staunton Turnpike when she ran off the right side of the roadway and her vehicle pulled into the soft ditch, the vehicle traveled in the ditch and then climbed onto a steep embankment causing the vehicle to roll onto its top. The driver refused EMS transport and awaited a family member to pick her up. The vehicle was towed and information taken for a crash report.

* A deputy responded to the area of Staunton Turnpike in reference to a possible hit and run. The vehicle was located in the area of Staunton Turnpike west of Meadville Road in the eastbound lane as the vehicle was stuck in standstill traffic at this location. Contact was made with the driver who advised he had struck a vehicle from the rear nearby and had stopped and spoken with the other driver before he had moved his vehicle. Upon speaking with him the odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from his person. John Michael Jackson, 73, of Buckner Bend Road, was arrested on a charge of DUI. He was transported to the Holding Center for processing, arraigned before a magistrate where he was given a $1,000 PR bond and released. A crash report taken.

Jan. 29

* Deputies responded to the intersection of Harris Highway and New England Ridge Road in reference to a head-on style vehicle crash with unknown injuries. Vehicle 1 was a Dodge Ram, Vehicle 2 was a Ford Fusion and Vehicle 3 was a Ford Edge. Vehicle 1 was sitting perpendicular across Harris Highway facing New England Ridge Road with front end damage primarily on the passenger side wheel well area. Vehicle 2 was also sitting perpendicular across Harris Highway facing New England Ridge Road with heavy front end damage with all front air bags deployed. Vehicle 3 was sitting at the stop sign at the end of New England Ridge Road getting ready to turn southbound onto Harris Highway having minor front end damage on the driver side it was able to be driven from the scene. A citation was issued to the driver of Vehicle 2 for no operators. Vehicles 1 and 2 were towed from the scene. Crash report taken.

* A deputy responded to Robert Byrd Highway between Varner Road and Montgomery Hill Road for a motor vehicle crash. The driver of the semi stated that he had been traveling west and was passing a black tractor trailer and while passing this tractor trailer had been swerving and while he was passing on the left the trailer came into his lane and struck him on the passenger side front bumper, this caused him to lose control and steer to the right striking the guardrail. The other tractor trailer causing the damage had continued without stopping. Front end damage was observed as well as damage to the side of his cab there was also a flat front passenger tire. There was an estimated 100-200 feet of damage to the guardrail with DOH being notified. Crash report taken.

* A deputy responded to Robert Byrd Highway in the area of the 1.5 mm in reference to a vehicle crash involving a deer. The driver stated he was traveling east on Robert Byrd Highway when a deer entered the roadway and collided with the front end of his vehicle. Damage was observed to the front end of the vehicle on the passenger side.

* Deputies responded to Hill Avenue in reference to a domestic disturbance. The father stated that he and his son had been in a verbal argument which turned into a physical altercation. Christopher Alan Kohler, 39, of Hill Avenue, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery, was transported to the Holding Center for processing, arraigned before a magistrate and given a $3,000 surety bond for which was posted and he was released.

Jan. 30

* A deputy responded to Wood County Circuit Court in reference to a warrant service. Dakota Sean Hefner, 32, of 23rd Street, was served with the warrant Indictment for charges of false pretense with value of $1,000 or more and obstructing by making false statements to law enforcement. She posted bond to the Circuit Court, processed at the Holding Center and released.

* Deputies responded to Staunton Turnpike in reference to a vehicle crash involving a deer. The vehicle sustained heavy front end damage causing the front airbags to deploy. The vehicle was towed and the driver refused EMS transport electing to have a family member transport her to get checked out.

* Deputies responded to Kathy’s Lane in reference to a domestic disturbance. Deputies were also advised that the male had taken a gun out of the cabinet. The female stated she and the male had an argument and he had taken a gun out of the cabinet, he did not point it at anyone however she stated this put her in fear for her and her children who were also inside the residence as he had made threatening statements. Tyler Austin Hartley, 32, of Kathy’s Lane, was arrested on five charges of wanton endangerment. He was processed at the Holding Center and arraigned.

* From Jan. 24-30, deputies responded/answered 370 calls, including: 42 traffic stops; 50 speak with complainant by phone or in person; 27 domestic calls/domestic violence protective orders served; 21 traffic crashes; four mental hygiene order/pick up/transport; eight suspicious person/vehicle; 10 residence/business/area check; 10 disorderly driver/subject; 12 warrant service/warrant attempt; 10 intrusion alarm; 12 assist motorist/assist agency; nine check welfare/check subject; and 11 animal complaints.
