Overnight snow results in closures

Drivers were cautious this morning during their commutes to work. An overnight snowfall covered streets and caused the cancellation of schools in the region. A winter weather advisory is under effect until 1 p.m. today by the National Weather Service.

Schools in the region are closed due to snow this morning, school systems announced.

Most of the schools started with a 2-hour delay, then closed as more snow fell overnight.

The National Weather Service has the region under a winter weather advisory until 1 p.m. today. From 1-3 inches of snow are forecast with mixed precipitation and a light glazing of ice. Temperatures as of 7:45 a.m. were in the low to mid 30s.

Schools that closed include Wood County, Belpre City Schools, Wirt County, Pleasants County, Ritchie County, Warren Local Schools, Marietta City Schools, Fort Frye Local Schools, Wolf Creek Local Schools, Tyler County, North Christian School and Wood County Christian School.

“However, this will be a Non-Traditional Instruction Day and students will complete their assignments at home,” Ritchie County said on its social media post.

Veritas Academy in Marietta will be open, but urged caution.

“We are open today. We recommend driving up Pearl Street,” the academy said on its social media site.

WVU Parkersburg said it will operate under a delay.

Classes starting at 10 a.m. and later meet as scheduled. Classes with a 9:30 a.m. start time will meet at 10 a.m. For classes before 10 a.m., students are advised to check for faculty updates.

Online classes are unchanged. Clinical students should follow instructions from supervisors and employees delayed by weather should notify their supervisor.
