PARKERSBURG — A person of interest has been detained after a shooting that wounded two people Monday afternoon in south Parkersburg.

Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew Board issued a statement saying that at 1:52 p.m. Monday Wood County 911 received a report of gunfire in the area of the 2300 block of Belmont Road. Callers reported that rounds had been fired into a vehicle.

“Responding officers arrived on scene and determined that the victims had relocated approximately one block from the initial incident location,” Board said. “Upon locating the vehicle, officers discovered two individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds.”

Officers identified a person of interest believed to be involved in the shooting, he said.

“That individual was located and detained within eight minutes of the initial 911 call,” Board said.

The two victims were transported to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center for treatment, he said.

At this time, their identities and the extent of their injuries are not being released due to the active status of the investigation, Board said. The identity of the suspected individual is also being withheld pending further inquiry.

Wood County Schools Superintendent Christie Willis said three schools were impacted by the situation.

Parkersburg South High School and Gihon Elementary School were on lockdown with no one entering or leaving those buildings. Officials said this was due to the incident’s close proximity to the schools.

Franklin Elementary Center was on lockout, meaning no one was allowed into the building but children could be released to a parent or guardian. The incident occurred right around the dismissal time for pre-K students.

Board said that was done out of an “abundance of caution.”

“The shooting, in and of itself, was unrelated to school or school personnel and did not occur on school grounds,” he said.

The lockdown and lockout were lifted by 2:40 p.m. and dismissals at all the schools were running on the normal schedule, Willis said.

Wood County Schools sent a message to parents at 2:45 p.m., noting law enforcement resolved the situation before the district had time to issue the notification.

“At no point were any of our students or staff in danger,” the message said.
