Parkersburg recycling pickups on hold

PARKERSBURG — The city of Parkersburg’s recycling collections are on hold due to mechanical problems with its trucks.
Mayor Tom Joyce said the city owns and normally operates three recycling trucks, all of which were acquired prior to 2014. Two of them are at the contracted vendor for repairs, he said, and city officials were notified late last week that they are still awaiting parts.
The third truck is being worked on in-house as municipal garage personnel continue to attempt to address a repeated problem with some mechanical parts, Joyce said.
The city posted on its Facebook page Thursday that recycling would not be picked up and they hoped to resume Monday, but the issues were not resolved in time.
“I cannot say when we will resume recycling at the curbside, but this is temporary, and we encourage folks to hold it for now or they can bring it down on their own as the recycling (center off 24th Street) is open 24/7,” Joyce said.
He said officials are discussing plans to catch up on recycling pickups once the trucks are back in service and routes resume.
Joyce noted money has been appropriated in municipal budgets toward the purchase of a replacement recycling truck in the future, similar to what the city has done for firefighting apparatus.
