ELIZABETH — An adult and two young children were the victims of a fatal fire this week in Elizabeth, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office announced Thursday.

The Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a reported fully engulfed house fire at 200 Whited Road at 9:03 a.m.

The victims’ names have not been released, but they were described as a 25-year-old man and boys ages 3 and 2 in a release from the Fire Marshal’s Office issued Thursday. One occupant of the home, a 22-year-old female, was injured in the fire and is now in a Cleveland hospital, the release added.

Investigators with the Fire Marshal’s Office were at the scene and say the cause of the fire has not been determined yet and is still under investigation, the release said.

The victims were transported to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification, the fire marshal’s office reported.

Wirt County Sheriff Lew Peck said the community is taking this tragedy hard.

“People are devastated because of the children and people having an association with the family,” he said. “I have worked here for 45 years, and I personally know these family members.

“It is a tough time and a lot of prayers are needed to be able to get through this difficult situation.”

Peck said they are continuing to work with the fire marshal’s office on the investigation.

Right now, the community is rallying around the family.

“We will be totally supportive of them,” Peck said.

Elizabeth Fire Chief Stephen Settle said Thursday they also found two dogs who died in the fire.
